Hi - The 'new' LiveStats Beta continues to develop. We've had excellent feedback, both positive and critical about the devel from statisticians, journos and viewers. The stats suggest that the use of mobile especially is at an all-time high, so responsive design has been a big hit with the community - and mobile has been a main driver behind where we're heading.
We know there are a couple of issues, especially in terms of page refresh.
We've noticed that as the pages are now deeper, the default 30 second refresh can be a distraction. As such, we've added the ability to have either a 60 second refresh rate, or 'OFF' (manual refresh).
Feel free to comment below- we are working on the new LiveStats on an ongoing basis and would love to hear your suggestions.
Cheers!
Dec11:
Hi all,
We're really happy to be able to share our latest release of FIBA LiveStats with you.
As you will have previously read, we have a goal to build league and club websites that render beautifully on web, tablet or mobile devices. Well, we have a sneak peek for you that's going live tomorrow night, Dec 16th, 2011.
Our LiveStats product was the obvious starting point in which to build our responsive design templates, as we know that over 50% of you watch sport on TV(or live) with your smartphone in hand.
We've given the skin a refresh, plus now - no matter if you're on web, tablet or mobile, LiveStats will recognise your device and scale the output appropriately.
In a nutshell, if you watch LiveStats on web, it will look like this;

| FIBA LiveStats - new webcast |
However, if you watch LiveStats on a mobile, you will no longer get content that you need to scroll horizontally for - instead, you see content that fits to the page. Rotate the device horizontally, and we have a little more space to give you full box scores.

We've already received great feedback from beta testing, and we've given it a run on one live WNBL game this week.
Now we're ready to lead sport in Australia - and basketball internationally with this new innovation.
We're really proud of the result. You can participate by spreading the word, watching the WNBL through LiveStats on Friday night and using the new Facebook and Twitter icons to share the results with the basketball world.

60 & 120 seconds help but having to click 'OK' on another dialogue box is a major pain - why not just highlight which one you are on? Note, that to have any chance to follow the game data it is necessary to regularly switch between 30 & 120.
ReplyDeleteStill, I'm annoyed that we must scroll to study data!!!!!! The huge digits are useless - who cares that it looks funky!!!!! Should see ten lines of 'play by play' without having to scroll!
Thanks for fixing the fonts, etc.
Regards,
Ashley Thorson.
Hi Ashley - thanks for the comments, well considered and much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteA couple of things.
1/ As we're in beta, there are a couple of things such as the 30/60 refresh that we simply weren't able to complete in the initial timeframe... I know it seems simple to highlight the choice and that is the intention (and will happen); we just haven't completed that task as yet.
2/ BIG NUMBERS! Yes, we hear you. We have a plan that the initial layout has a scoreboard feel and as you scroll, the scoreboard collapses to give you a smaller view of the game and also easy navigating of the 4 menu options (box scores, leaders, etc).
We're re-designing LIVESTATS with Ajax, which means that both of these issue will be minimised over time. Thanks again, we'll keep at it.
Andrew
Box Scores need to be BLACK print ON WHITE background, the same as it is on the current version of LiveStats. The beta version Box Scores are nowhere near as easy to read as the current version IMO.
ReplyDeletewhy have "Eff" stat category? +/- is a more prevalent stat.
ReplyDeletecheck out live basketball scoring on nba.com, espn.com or cbs.com thats what you call real live scoring. I dont know what to call this, frustrating and annoying maybe.
ReplyDeleteThe Box Score page (in particular) is more difficult to read in this new version. The old version of black\grey player names\stats on a white background is far easier to read.
ReplyDeleteThe new version is particularly annoying if you are trying to look at the stats after the game has been completed. Not only are the stats for the players that were sitting on the bench at the end of the game hard to read, the constant refreshing of the page is very annoying if you want to have a leisurely look at the stats.
The old version was far better, more compact and far easier to read\decipher.

As a fantasy basketball player it's really annoying not having the turnovers statistic on the mobile live stats. When I'm trying to figure out my final fantasy score a turnover (-2) stat line helps to get a accurate total for my fantasy score. Can this be put back in?

Andrew,
ReplyDeleteWould 'Box Score' be a better choice for the default landing page? It's logical to check the team line-ups firstly, while the other pages only come to interest after the game has commenced.

Ashley Thorson.
Agree with Anonymous - as a journo, the plus/minus is a much more handy tool for determining who's had an impact on a game.
ReplyDeleteAlso agree with Ashley re the size of the digits. While the new version is great for iPhones etc, can you create an option where we have the choice of viewing the 'old' format when browsing on the web?
Thanks very much.
Hi all,
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your feedback - we have taken it on board and produced a black text on white framework - agreed, it looks better and easy to read.
We're really pleased with the result - enjoy the NBL Finals Series..
BTW @Josh - if you swivel your phone to the 'landscape' view, you'll see the extended boxscore, inc turnovers..
cheers
Follow the lead of the major American leagues. ie, refresh page elements (score, play-by-play, stats), without having to reload the page.
ReplyDeleteIt makes a much crisper & more enjoyable viewing experience
:)
thanks for your comment.
ReplyDeleteyes, its on the agenda and your suggestion will be in place for the next NBL season.
cheers
Where are the scores?????
