Get your colours right

Hi again...

We're in full swing with our test sites and receiving a lot of good feedback.  One question that has been ongoing is how the colours will manifest on the new sites - especially heading colours.

At present, your live site has up to 30 colour combinations in up to 6 tabs (dependant on your current layout)

Current Site Colour Option Tabs

However, the new sites will give you 5 colour options in total.  Whilst it seems like a big difference, the fact is that we currently have 3 separate menu bars, each with 2 different colours and a menu divider colour - that equates to 9 colour options on the menu alone.

We have now simplified this to 2 colours - a menu text colour and a menu background colour.

So, the colours that matter will be in the places that count - and you site will look and feel far more integrated and professional as a result.

Test Site (and site upgrade) Colour Options - now 5 colour options for ease of use

We've also built a preview panel, so you can see where the colours will manifest on your new site before you send them live.

OK - so the question is - on Monday 22nd, how will my present site colours look on the new site?

By looking at your test site, you'll see exactly how your colours will look on Monday - however, here's the info on where exactly the colours are being drawn from in the lead up to the change.

Colour Option = CO

CO1:  Heading Colour - currently: Headings Tab - Heading 1 Background Colour
CO2:  Page Title Colour - currently: Page Tab - Body Text
CO3:  Background Colour - currently: Page Tab - Background Colour
CO4:  Top Menu Text Colour(*) - currently: Top Menu - Top Nav Text Colour
CO5:  Top Menu Background Colour(*) - currently: Top Menu - Top Menu Background Colour

(*) Note:  If your site has no Top Menu at present, menu text and background colours are drawn from the left menu; if no left menu, the colours are drawn from the right menu!

The colour and font settings can be found in the Site Administrators Control Panel > Configuration > Advanced > Colours and Fonts

Finally - Make a note of the colour combination you like on the test site, because you'll have to do this on Monday when the site upgrade takes place.

  2. 1. How do I choose a colour?

    2. Everytime I change a colour it tells me the contrast is too low and takes away the update button. All I am trying to so is switch the colours around but it won't let me.

    PLEASE HELP.

  3. Hi D Miller!

OK - we've had a fair bit of feedback about this one - I'll add an amendment to the blog post above.

In a nutshell - we transitioned all new colour schemes from the 'old' sites to new. So, we've made some logical decisions based on information about site background colours and menu colours (etc).

The first time you go into the site editor to update colours, the website checks EVERY colour combination on the site - not only the colour you are trying to change.

The result of this is that there are some colours - and especially the 'HEADING COLOUR' that asks for an update, even if you are trying other colours (e.g. you are changing your menu colour and get told that "The contrast between the heading colour and the white background is too low").

So, simply - you need to look at all the colour combos the first time you log in to your website editor.

  4. Our colours are royal blue and lime green. I have tried a number of combinations and still keep getting the 'Contrast too great'reply and no update button. I tried using grey etc as well as our colours but still get the "contrast" answer.

Could you give me some suggestions please.

  5. Hi there,

    A couple of thoughts.

One issue may be if you're trying to use lime green on a white background - so, perhaps avoid that as the contrast would be poor I'd suspect.

Dependant on the 'dominant' colour, you could use royal blue and your background, with a green menu bar, perhaps with black text (or dark blue font) - a lime green background may be a little overbearing, but you can try colours quickly in the back end before committing them live.

Finally - check your 'heading colour'. You may find in the transition to the new site layouts that you have a default heading colour that is too light to display on a white background. Its the top colour option...

If you're still stuck, email a link to your website with a club logo to websites@sportingpulse.com and we'll give you a hand.

    Cheers, Andrew

  6. hey
on the clubs site the links to other websites and other pages, is the same color as the background, so you cant see the links, unless you highlight it. so how do it change the colors so the links can be shown?

  7. Hey anon - I think what you'll find is that in the website transition, your 'heading colour' will be light, or white. So, go into your advanced colour settings and choose a colour (like black) for your headings.
